Can you buy a Xiaomi SU7 in the USA?

No legal route for a private buyer

Last updated: · Unofficial, not affiliated with Xiaomi

No. As of 28 September 2026 a private buyer cannot legally import and register a new Xiaomi SU7 in the United States. Xiaomi sells the SU7 only in China, and founder Lei Jun said on 10 February 2026 that Xiaomi has "no immediate plans to enter the US market". The car was not built to US safety standards (FMVSS), and a China-built EV carries 127.5% in stacked import duties: 2.5% base, 100% Section 301 and 25% Section 232. On paper that turns an SU7 Standard ($34,246 at today's exchange rate) into roughly $80,559 before state sales tax.

Xiaomi's position on the US market

In February 2026 a Xiaomi YU7 was photographed on a US interstate with Illinois plates. Lei Jun answered on Weibo: "We currently have no immediate plans to enter the US market. I suspect this YU7 was purchased by a US peer or supplier for benchmarking purposes." (CnEVPost, 10 February 2026.)

The only overseas launch Xiaomi has announced is Europe in 2027, starting with Germany, where it signed memoranda with eight dealer groups at IFA Berlin on 3 September 2026. North America is not part of that plan.

Why a private import does not work

US import rules (49 CFR 591.5) allow a car that does not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards into the country only through a NHTSA-registered importer, and only after NHTSA has decided that the specific model and model year can be brought up to standard. The importer also posts a bond of 150% of the car's dutiable value. No such decision has been publicised for the SU7.

The other door is age: a vehicle 25 or more years old is exempt from FMVSS. For a car first sold in 2024, that is 2049.

Separate exemptions exist for research, show or display, demonstrations and racing, with written NHTSA permission. They do not give a private owner a road-registrable car.

The connected-vehicle rule closes the door for Xiaomi itself

On 14 January 2025 the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security finalised a rule that bars manufacturers owned by, controlled by or subject to the jurisdiction of the PRC from selling new connected vehicles in the US, even if the car is built in America. The software ban starts with model year 2027 and the hardware ban with model year 2030. It covers passenger vehicles under 10,001 lb.

In practice that means even an official Xiaomi entry would need a change in US policy first, not just a homologation programme.

What the tariffs alone would add

Three duties stack on a China-built electric car: the 2.5% general rate for HTS 8703.80, the 100% Section 301 rate in force since 27 September 2024, and the 25% Section 232 auto tariff in force since 3 April 2025. US customs value excludes international freight, so the 127.5% is charged on the car price only.

For an SU7 Max ($44,673), duty alone is $56,958, making $104,281 with shipping before any state sales tax. The table below repeats that for every trim.

Hypothetical: these figures show what the tariffs would add if the car could be imported. It cannot be registered for road use today.

Inputs: Duty: 2.5% + 100% Section 301 + 25% Section 232 127.5% on FOB value; State sales tax 0%; ECB exchange rate of 2026-09-25; shipping from Welltrans Logistics, Car Shipping Cost from China in 2026.

US grey-market listings

We found no public US listing offering a road-registered Xiaomi SU7 as of 28 September 2026. Sellers advertising a "US-legal SU7" would have to show an NHTSA eligibility decision for it; treat any listing without one as a red flag.

Xiaomi SU7 in United States: FAQ

Is the Xiaomi SU7 sold in the USA?
No. Xiaomi sells the SU7 only in China, and Lei Jun said on 10 February 2026 that Xiaomi has no immediate plans to enter the US market.
Can I import a Xiaomi SU7 to the US myself?
Not for road use. A car that does not meet FMVSS can only come in through a NHTSA-registered importer after NHTSA rules the model eligible, or once it is 25 years old. Neither applies to the SU7 today.
How much would a Xiaomi SU7 cost in the US with tariffs?
A China-built EV pays 127.5% in stacked duties (2.5% + 100% Section 301 + 25% Section 232) on the car price. At 25 September 2026 exchange rates an SU7 Standard would land at about $80,559 and an SU7 Max at about $104,281 with shipping, before state sales tax.
Will Xiaomi launch the SU7 in America?
Nothing is announced. Besides tariffs, the Commerce Department connected-vehicle rule bars China-linked manufacturers from selling connected cars in the US from model year 2027.
